How can digital innovation honour the tradition of painting while exploring new ways of presenting art?
Canvas Legacies marks a significant moment in the practice of Yadegar Asisi, an artist known for his immersive panoramas over the past two decades. The project bridges traditional painting and cutting-edge digital art, drawing inspiration from the Impressionist movement. Re-imagining the canvas of Asisi's oil painting for Die Kathedrale von Monet, the collection captures the painting's textures, colours and depth using macro photography, 3D depth mapping and motion design. This process resulted in the creation of fourteen digital artworks, six of which were minted as NFTs.
As part of the exhibition Die Kathedrale von Monet, the artworks are currently featured in a 14-channel video installation entitled Maler im Licht in Leipzig. The installation extracts key figures from the original artwork, which is displayed in the same room, and highlights their significance within the art world. The prototype was built entirely in-house and then deployed by a technical team via 14 synchronised 4" screens.
In addition to the multi-channel installation, visual assets—including the logo, promotional reels and animations for social media—were created to launch the digital art collection. These assets were also displayed on a 9 meter wide LED wall at a pop-up store in Berlin, promoting the collection and marking Asisi's foray into the digital art space.
